ABOUT US
A Unified Voice
About Us
The United Native American Housing Association (UNAHA) is a regional champion for sustainable, affordable housing across Indian Country. Established in 1985, we serve as the primary advocacy body and resource hub for over 30 member Tribes and their housing entities within HUD Region VIII.
Our membership spans eight states—Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Utah, and Kansas—representing the housing interests of approximately 300,000 American Indians living on large, land-based reservations.
Our Mission
To provide a powerful, collective voice for Tribal housing interests and to support our members in delivering safe, decent, and affordable housing that honors the traditional values of the communities we serve.
What We Do
UNAHA bridges the gap between local Tribal needs and national policy. We focus on:
- Legislative Advocacy: We actively lobby for the reauthorization of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) and other critical federal funding to address severe housing shortages and infrastructure gaps.
- Training & Technical Assistance: We provide member housing entities with expert training on financial literacy, homebuyer education, and complex regulatory compliance.
- National Representation: UNAHA ensures our region is heard at the highest levels by providing delegates to the National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) and AMERIND Risk.
- Resource Sharing: We serve as a clearinghouse for information on Section 184 home loans, methamphetamine remediation, and disaster relief resources.
Governance & Meetings
UNAHA is governed by a Board of Directors composed of elected officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer). To maximize our members’ travel and training budgets, we convene three times a year in conjunction with major regional and national events:
- Annual Meeting: Held in Denver, Colorado.
- Summer Meeting: Hosted at rotating member locations.
- Winter Meeting: Held in Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside the NAIHC Legal Symposium.
